  1. GENERAL
  2. The Thematic Network for Ultraviolet Measurements started its operation on 15th of November 1997. This is the third six-monthly report of the Network, describing its progress during period 15/11/1998-14/06/1999. In general, the Network is proceeding well in schedule.

  3. PROGRESS

2.1 Third Workshop

The third workshop of the Network will be arranged at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington, UK, on September 8 - 10, 1999.

The programme for the workshop is ready. The workshop will include five invited talks, meetings and presentations of the working groups, a poster session, an equipment exhibition, and visits to the laboratories of NPL.

The programme for the workshop was published in the March issue of UVNEWS with a call for registration. The deadline for the registration was 11/06/99.

2.2 WWW-Pages

The WWW-pages of the Network have been opened and announced public in March, 1999. The pages may be found in the address: http://metrology.hut.fi/uvnet/.

During the reporting period, a lot of effort was put to the pages. The visual appearance of the pages has been renewed completely. The contents have been updated regularly as the Network progresses.

2.3 Newsletter

The second Newsletter (UVNEWS) of the Network was issued in March 1999 (a copy enclosed). The second UVNEWS included reports and extended abstracts of the second workshop and announced the third workshop. Also preliminary programme for the training course was published.

UVNEWS has appeared to be surprisingly popular. The circulation now exceeds 150. Organisations are using the news-section regularly to promote their research.

2.4 Training Courses

The first training course will be arranged at NPL in Teddington, on September 6-8, 1999. The training course is combined with the third workshop of the Network.

NPL has finalised the programme for the training course. The lecturers and topics of the lectures are presented in Table 1.

NPL has prepared a leaflet on the course, which will be mailed shortly through the national contact persons of the Network.

2.5 New Participants

Laboratoire National d’Essais (LNE, France) has been officially approved as a regular participant in the Network. No other participants are considered at the moment.

The Network continues to create interest. The number of persons involved in the mailing lists of the Network presently exceeds 150. New countries involved include Canada, Russia and Saint Lucia.

2.6 Presentations on the activities of the Network

On June 3, Dr. Antonio Corrons (Instituto de Fisica Aplicada, Spain) gave a presentation on the activities of the Network in Desde el Quinto Programa Marco hacia la Competitividad. Seminario sobre Medidas y Ensayos.
